The men’s section at Bedford & County Golf Club provides the total golf experience which incorporates many different opportunities to join in and enjoy your golf in both a competitive and informal environment.
Club matches against other local courses are played throughout the year both home and away at various skill levels. The scratch team, the mid handicap team, and club teams offer a great way to mix not only with Bedford & County golfers but also with our compatriots from several regional courses.
The men’s competition calendar runs a full 12 months and includes fixtures in many different formats. These include singles golf, pairs golf, team golf, mixed golf, medals, stableford competitions, foursome and greensome, scrambles, fun days, 4 nations and Cap Pro events.
Medal play is also available for 8 months of the year at both weekend and midweek. These games incorporate medal stroke play and medal stableford competitions in summer and medal stableford competitions in winter, allowing everyone to compete against the course as well as against the rest of the field. The results of these games are collated by our handicaps/ competitions team who ensure everyone’s handicap is kept up to date, using the new World Handicap System (WHS).
While the competitive element is always thrilling, it is not always what our members require to fulfil their needs. Bedford & County prides itself in operating a full and inclusive social golf system, the mainstay being the daily roll-ups which operate all year round. Each day there are organised roll ups both early morning and midday. Details of times vary dependent upon the time of year but are posted on our website and available from the club office or the Pro shop. The roll ups are well attended and provide a great opportunity for members old and new to meet each other in a friendly and comfortable environment. Bedford & County consider these informal roll ups as a great asset in that they allow new members to become quickly integrated into the golf club and provide a perfect avenue to create new friendships.
As well as the informal roll ups there are several traditional matches played each year which provide a platform for camaraderie and team spirit. The President vs Vice Presidents field teams in opposition to each other. The Captain and Vice-Captain do likewise. There is a Captain vs Past Captains match and a Rabbits vs Tigers event. All of these are designed to include as many different members as possible and become major social occasions as well as furnishing the winning teams with 12 months of bragging rights.
Steve Vinnicombe, our Club Professional and various groups within the golf club run golf trips both in the UK and abroad. Those organised by our Pro, incorporate coaching sessions and are inclusive of all that you require for the perfect break.
The ladies have a very active section including a weekly morning reserved tee slot, open to all ladies, with a draw for partners, plus a roll up on Tuesday mornings.
These are excellent opportunities for new lady members to meet and play with the ladies’ group. In addition, the senior ladies, those over 50, have a reserved slot on the first Monday of every month. Medals and stableford competitions take place throughout the summer months together with knockout competitions. Competitions are played both during the week and at weekends so there is no problem if you are a working lady. The winter is much more relaxed with team competitions being the main feature to take account of any inclement weather.
Home fun mixed competitions are the feature of Bank Holiday weekends and mixed matches are played against other local clubs during the year. There is plenty of opportunity to represent the club in friendly ladies’ matches and the very competitive league (Shield) and scratch matches run by the BLCGL (Bedfordshire Ladies County Golf Limited) against the other clubs within Bedfordshire. Our annual Lady Captain’s Day is held at the weekend at Bedford & County with a mixed competition on the Saturday and a ladies’ competition on the Sunday – this is always a very special fun weekend.
To add to all of this there is a lady Captain’s away day and away night – so lots of opportunities for ladies to spend time together both at home and away.
The Seniors are a very important section of the golf club who love their golf and can be found enjoying a game most days of the week. The Seniors membership age group is 55 years +. The seniors are very much part of the daily roll-up scene, together with many other members, both early morning and midday. There are also smaller pockets or groups who play at different times on regular days and all are very welcoming.
The senior section also operates a fully competitive calendar throughout the season, with 10 major events, thus allowing all those of a certain age to pit their skills against the rest.
Each year the senior team play up to 28 fixtures (both home and away) against regional and local clubs. these are extremely well supported and the organisers take particular care in ensuring everyone is given opportunities to represent our club. Golfers are also able to play some very good courses and partake in some excellent lunches at much reduced rates. there is also a seniors’ scratch team who play home and away against five local clubs for those seniors who have maintained a low handicap.
Each year there are also various social and informal days such as the Seniors’ Invitation and Open days which is always very well attended and a much celebrated and enjoyed event by the participants
